Valve bans over 40,000 Dota 2 players for abusing matchmaking
A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value.
For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends.

Most Dota 2 fans aspire to emulate the best players in the world. While they might not be able to match the level of gameplay the pros constantly put out, they can certainly match their queueing times for ranked matches. How did queue times get so bad for Dota 2 solo players? The previous system split MMR into solo and party, with most players in the community acknowledging solo as the true indicator of skill for players.
Now, players would theoretically be judged by how well they played their role, regardless of whether they were solo queueing or in a party. With solo and party MMR removed, positive side effects included a renewed focus on creating full stacks of five, even at the highest level of MMR. In general, more players prefer to play core positions where they take more farm, get more items, and use them to destroy opponents.
Meanwhile, less people play support, resulting in a player count disparity and turning matchmaking into a refresher on the basic laws of supply and demand. This has resulted in a chain effect of reactions. While cores suffer from extreme queue times, hard supports are placed into matches with high variation of skill. This results in a catch situation for both types of players where nobody obtains their desired outcome.

This update also includes several changes intended to remove undesirable behavior from the matchmaking pool. First, being marked for low-priority matches now results in a duration-based ban from the Ranked queue, in addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority.
Next, it should go without saying that while the wide variety of playstyles that Dota players bring to a given match will always be welcome, intentionally ruining games for other players is never condoned. This should help resolve several areas in which these bot accounts have a negative effect on the experience of the Dota community. We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues.

Since the very first tweak during TI9, Valve hit a roadblock as most of the high-ranked players are still noticing a considerable disruption in their matches. For that matter, Valve has recently pushed another update regarding matchmaking to try and achieve different results. This update is supposed to minimize the problems that experienced players are facing, especially at some of the most experienced players across the globe.
Valve has posted the change and how the matchmaking system faces a new disparity than before. This will also prevent party matchmaking from acting as cheating and will allow the opposing team to settle in a game a fairer game. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party. We think this trade-off is worthwhile at this high level, however, because matches are unlikely to be of high quality anyways with extremely disparate skill levels within a party given the shallow pool available.
Such disparity has often made the games less fun for most players involved.

Dota 2 Gets Big Experimental Changes to Ranked Matchmaking
As per usual, the update includes new cosmetics and balances. Instead of two separate ranks, there are now five role ranks and an overall MMR foundation system. Players will have a single rank system that uses handicaps for each of the five ranked positions. Essentially, every player automatically has five rank roles. They can queue for a ranked match. And if they queue with their most successful rank role, they’ll encounter opposing player’s that are equivalent or much higher in skill level.
But when a player queues with a weaker role rank, they’ll face opponents that are lower in rank.

We expect that this will have the net effect of reducing the number of party games at the highest skill levels by some amount, but compared to how infrequent high-MMR party games were in the past, the number of party games should still be higher than the historical average. For any five-player party, they will now only be matched against other five-player parties, regardless of any other matchmaking consideration.
We are unsure if an absolute requirement like this will result in net higher quality matchmaking due to the more limited opponent spectrum available in that case, but we know this is an aspect the community talks about often and we are going to do our best to work within those constraints. Similarly, any solo player will now only ever be considered for matches against at most one party of two. This will be a hard requirement for the matchmaker instead of a situational consideration.
We will be monitoring the system after release to make sure the fixes have the intended effect. It is possible that there will be more issues to work out, so if you notice anything too far off please let us know.
